Music Festivals of Asia

Asia has a great tradition of music festival going back thousands of years, many connected with religious festivals and occasions. The modern music festival has captured the imagination of many Asian countries as they have embraced Western culture and music. The locations and destinations of some of our Asian festivals are extreme and highly unusual, and this is encapsulated in the first festival focused on.

Fuji Rock

This is the largest festival in Japan, and surely is in the most dramatic location. To access this festival, you will need to take a cable car up the magnificent and moody Mount Fuji. Held every July at the Naeba Ski Resort, Fuji Rock attracts some of the most famous artists in the world. The 2017 festival featured: Gorillaz, Bjork, Aphex Twin, Lorde, The XX, Your Song Is Good, Belly Love and Licaxxx. All the proceeds of the 2017 festival went to Benefit for Nippon, which is the Great East Japan earthquake reconstruction project. Perhaps the most memorable moment that ever came from Fuji Rock was when the Red-Hot Chili Peppers performed in a thunder and lightning storm, and bizarrely lead singer Anthony Kiedis performed with a broken arm.

Magnetic Fields

This Indian festival has an unbelievable location as it takes place in a 17th Century Rajasthani palace that is just outside the marvellous Pink City of Jaipur. The stages and venues for the bands are perfectly designed to blend with the environment and the beautiful location. The same is the case for the musicians that appear at Magnetic Fields with a blend of local bands and International artists. The festival audience is an eclectic assortment of expats, back-packers and Indians that love to party and rave. Artists that will be appearing in the December 2017 festival will be: Four Tet, Ben UFO, Machinedrum, Actress, Jayda G, Jack Barnett and The Ska Vengers.

Pentaport Rock

This South Korean festival held annually in Incheon is predominantly a rock festival and is one of South Korea’s biggest music festivals. The delightful sounding Songdo Moonlight Festival Park plays host annually every August to this popular music event. 2017 was a major success featuring local and International artists, appearing in the 2017 Pentaport Rock festival were Bastille, Justice, 5 Seconds of Summer, You Me at Six, Dua Lipa, Issues and Sundara Karma. Most of the bands appearing at Pentaport Rock are guitar bands, and as well as the music the festival focuses on friendship, passion and the environment. It is renowned for bringing people together in one big party atmosphere.

Unusually the promoters have selected the monsoon season to hold this outdoor event, so a sudden downpour is regularly witnessed. Most festival goers arrive well protected from the elements as typically the Asian rainy season is totally unpredictable. These Asian festivals are all highly popular, so much so that it is difficult to actually get an entrance pass to the venues. But all are thoroughly worth attending, as they are so different to other festivals held in the West.

Firstly, the venues are spectacular, but it is the unique atmosphere that really differentiates them from normal mainstream music festivals. If you love music festivals and have a festival Bucket List, then one of the great Asian festivals has to be on your list.
