The Nova Rock Festival in Austria has been taking place on the outermost border with Hungary since 2005. The 4-day event has developed into one of the largest rock festivals in Europe. Near gigantic wind turbines, the area extends over the endless expanses of the Pannonian lowlands. The best place to find shade here is under a blade of grass. The weather conditions are correspondingly challenging in some years but music lovers are not afraid and attend the event.
It all started in the founding year of the Nova Rock Festival. Organizers and visitors still have a T-shirt with the following slogan: I survived Nova Rock 2005. What happened? The festival suffered from lousy weather right from the start. The torrential rain ensured that the ground turned into a gigantic mud field. There were also gale-force winds and a cold snap. The entire area threatened to swim away. Thirty thousand visitors came every day, around 20,000 of whom camped around the site. But this threatened to dissolve completely. The masses of mud created a colossal mess. Vehicles could no longer drive and got stuck everywhere; the situation worsened from one day to another. The organizers began to cover the entire area with straw on the second day to cover the softened earth.
All the Superstars Have Already Been Here
Today the capers are forgotten. Those who were there still laugh at it. The festival has now become a fixed point in the European concert calendar. Every year in June, the world’s most popular bands are on the numerous stages. There have been many highlights in the last 15 years. From System of a Down to Green Day, Metallica, Guns’n’Roses, Pearl Jam, Linkin Park, Motörhead, Slipknot and Rammstein, the list of stars who have already been on stage here extends. In addition to the stars, the Nova Rock Festival has made a name for itself with one innovation.
The organizers have been booking against the grain for several years. That affects two slots at the festival. The annual morning pint has already become famous. A brass band is on the stage and heats the tired visitors in the early morning. What was initially acknowledged with a shake of the head has developed into a secret hit. With pretzels and beer, the promoters transformed the Nova into a kind of Munich Oktoberfest. As if that were not enough, after the headliner on Saturday after midnight, acts that you would never have expected at a festival like this climb the stages.
These include the German comedian Otto and David Hasselhoff. Their shows have also become an institution. The organizers were able to establish the festival among numerous large competitors. In addition to Rock am Ring and Glastonbury, the Nova Rock attracts fans from Europe to Austria. They all enjoy the four days in June under the blazing sun of Burgenland and party until the early hours of the morning.
