The 2017 summer festival season in America is coming to an end and there were some spectacular performances to be heard right across the nation. Many of the events were in the EDM genre as that is by far the most attended and popular, however once again Monterey was superb, and the Newport Folk Festival bought memories flooding back to the 60’s and Flower Power scene. In this blog we take a look at the best festivals during a very busy 2017 season in the USA.
The 2017 festival season all kicked off in Washington State in May, and Sasquatch. The line-up was significant and featured multi-genre bands from all over the USA and further afield. Frank Ocean, Twenty-One Pilots, MGMT, The Shins, Phantogram, Bleachers, and Chance the Rapper. What is so unique about Sasquatch is that it features a designated comedy section, which this year was led by Fred Armisen. Of course, the setting of the Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Washington is superb, and helps the atmosphere really rock at this most unique of festivals.
The location of BottleRock deep in the Napa Valley of California ensures that there is plenty of the local grape and excellent food on offer at this predominantly pop music festival. This year was no exception with the headline act being no other than Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, also delivering knock out sets were Foo Fighters, Maroon 5, the Strumbellas, and the Naked & Famous. BottleRock always provides some of the best American rock bands and the best of Indie to complement perfectly. This festival never lets the music lover down, and in 2017 it once again did not disappoint.
The first real techno and EDM festival of the season, Movement is a multistage event held over two days in May. This Detroit based techno festival has been one of the premier events of its genre in the USA, and the line-up for 2017 was as strong as ever, featuring Carl Cox, Richie Hawtin, Ben Klock, Adam Beyer, Danny Brown, DJ Harvey and Juicy J. Movement is highly popular with families and features events like free yoga classes so that everybody can enjoy participating in the fun together.
Held in June every year the Governor’s Ball is New York’s only real festival. Held on just one day it crams in some fabulous bands playing some incredible music. 2017 saw Flume, Lorde, Danny Brown, Beach House, Wu-Tang Clan, Cage the Elephant and the Avalanches. Along with the bands, the Governor’s Ball has plenty of other entertainment to keep festival goers happy, including interactive photo booths, mini-golf, life-size board games and all manner of food stalls and refreshment booths. These festivals were just some of the great music events held in the early part of the summer in the USA, in Part 2 we venture far and wide across America in search of even more great festivals that lit up the music scene in 2017, all starting in Philadelphia with The Roots Picnic which took place on June the third.
